Frequently Asked Questions About Sedation Dentistry
What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is a very safe and effective way to completely avoid the anxiety associated with any part of dentistry. A great way to offer you a pleasant, dream-like dental appointment with little or no discomfort.
We will administer sedatives, either IV or oral, and titrate to your body type. You will be drowsy, relaxed, and eventually reach a sedated state. You will wake up with little to no memory of your appointment. Under conscious sedation (oral or IV), patients are able to maintain their own cardiovascular function and breathing.
Other than the little “prick” to access the IV, most patients feel no discomfort whatsoever during their treatment and feel refreshed afterwards. Local numbing is still administered even if sedation is utilized.
The sedatives have amnesic effects. It is unlikely you will remember anything at all.
Before starting any type of sedation, your health and medical history will be thoroughly reviewed. If you are unsuitable for sedation, we will recommend a safe alternative for you.
Yes. By inducing relaxation, anesthetics usually work better and quicker; and knowing that you will be sedated throughout the procedure will remove anxiety altogether.
This is another advantage of sedation dentistry. Gag reflex is greatly reduced when you are sedated, making it easier for dentistry to happen without any discomfort or anxiety.
